Case instructions

CBCT Protocol

  • Remove all metal objects and jewellery that may scatter the patients data. To minimise scatter by orthodontic braces or metal restorative work, align the occlusal plane as much as possible to the axial slices.

  • Patient CBCT scan ideally is taken with slightly open vertical bite and cheeks retracted.

    • Tip: Cotton rolls can be used for patient to bite down to open vertical.

    • Tip: Cotton rolls can be used to separate cheeks within vestibular.

    • Tip: Patient must be in still and not in motion during scan process.

Workflow for edentulous patients, dual scan technique protocol 2 - CBCT scans required

  • For almost all edentulous patients, a dual scan technique protocol of CBCT scans is required.

  • Patient to wear existing denture with 6–8 radiopaque markers spread throughout the denture (or barium sulphate copy denture) and a CBCT scan will take place.

  • Denture with 6–8 radiopaque markers (or copy denture) will additionally be scanned by itself.

    • Tip: Ensure the current denture is well fitted. Any loose fitting dentures a hard reline is required for proper fit of surgical guide.

    • Tip: Adjust CBCT setting to acquire the scan data of the denture. Place denture on top of a box as the base of the denture will sit upright as the scan takes place.

Image reconstruction and file formatting

  • The sharpest reconstruction algorithm should be used.

  • Images should be reconstructed with a 768 x 768 matrix.

  • Only the Axial images are required.
